8. Beginning in late July 1901, the Wrights began experiments with an improved glider, their second model. By now they had moved to a more suitable location at the Kill Devil Hills, a few miles south of Kitty Hawk.

Seated on a cot in the shed are, from the left, Octave Chanute, upon whose voluminous knowledge of previous attempts at flight the Wright brothers drew and who was a constant source of encouragement; Orville; and E. C. Huffaker, an associate of Chanute’s with whom Chanute was building a glider of their own. Wilbur is standing at the right. This was the first and last time the brothers went to the Kitty Hawk area in midsummer. They found the heat too fierce and the mosquitoes and sand fleas intolerable.
